4 March 2010 - Tackling Poverty and Social Exclusion in Europe through Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education in Adult Learning

EU Conference in Scotland: March 4th - 5th, 2010 Glasgow City Chambers, George Square, Glasgow G2 1DU

2010 marks the European Year of Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, and we are keen to ensure that Scotland plays an active role at UK and EU levels in addressing and raising awareness of these issues at various levels through Education and Democratic Citizenship (EDC) and Human Rights Education (HRE).

Black & Ethnic Minorities Infrastructure in Scotland (BEMIS) and Democracy & Human Rights Education in Adult Learning (DARE) Network will be delivering a European conference in Glasgow on the 4th – 5th March 2010 in line with the above notion.

The conference aims at:

  • Highlighting the topic of tackling poverty and social exclusion sharing experiences from EU and Scotland and debating progress since the Lisbon Treaty.
  • Raising awareness of Tackling Poverty and Social Exclusion through Education and Democratic Citizenship (EDC) and Human Rights Education (HRE).
  • Reflecting on learning from a Scottish perspective and EU approaches.
  • Assessing how Human Rights Education can be instrumental in Combating Poverty at various levels (legal, political, economic, etc). Helping promote a renewed sense of understanding of Poverty and Social Exclusion beyond definitions.
  • Helping promote enhanced engagement of diverse communities, policy makers and various equality strands in addressing issues regarding Tackling Poverty and Social Exclusion.

    The conference will be delivered over two days and addressed by Ms Nicola Sturgeon, Deputy First Minister of Scotland, Cabinet Secretary for Health & Well - Being, followed by presentations, country reports and workshops on poverty and social exclusion sharing Scottish and European experiences. A reception will be held by the Lord Provost of Glasgow on the evening of the 4th March.
